Hope for Grieving Youth

For over 47 years, Kara has been a source of comfort and hope for those who are grieving in our Bay Area neighborhoods. With the unwavering dedication of our staff and volunteers, we offer bereavement services at no cost to thousands of families in our community annually. Your donations to our vital work ensures that youth can access a space for healing, meaningful connections, and practical tools to find hope after loss.

Youth deserve the opportunity to grieve in a supportive and safe environment.

Children and teens who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives deserve the opportunity to grieve in a supportive and safe environment. Far too often, our society fails to understand, acknowledge, or support their grief. Kara's services for bereaved Children and Teens are guided by the following beliefs:

  • Grief is a natural reaction to loss for children and teens as well as adults
  • The duration and intensity of grief are unique for each individual
  • Caring and acceptance assist the healing process

The need for support for bereaved children and youth is staggering. In the Bay Area alone, nearly 200,000 youth and young adults will suffer the death of a parent or sibling by the time they are 25 years old. This number of bereaved youth would fill Levi's Stadium nearly 3 times!

In the first six months of 2024, requests for Kara's services for bereaved children, youth, and families are up 15% when compared to the same period of last year. To meet the growing need for grief support for youth and families, Kara offers a range of services including:

  • Bi-monthly grief support groups for children ages 5-11, middle schoolers, and teens (September-May)
  • Our Journeys Program of school-based peer support groups for elementary, middle, and high schools
  • Consultations with family members, school or healthcare personnel, therapists, or community members who are experiencing or supporting grieving youth
  • Camp Kara, our annual overnight weekend for youth 6-17, offering fun as well as grief education and support

We urge you to make a donation today! Join us as we provide compassion and hope to grieving youth.

We are deeply grateful for your kindness and generosity.
