Looking for Sandplay Items

ImageChildren have always delighted in playing in the sand, bringing their inner and outer worlds together through imagination. Sandplay therapy – allowing people to tell their stories and act out their fantasies using miniature figures in a tray of sand - has proven to be a valuable tool in psychotherapy and has been used for years in Kara's peer support groups for children. Kara’s Therapy Program is now building a sandplay collection to be used with children of all ages and with adults.

It can be quite costly to assemble a comprehensive collection of sandplay objects, so we are asking friends and supporters to help. We are looking for donations of interesting small (1-5 inches tall) objects including but not limited to:

• Figures of ordinary people – all colors, all ethnicities to represent mothers, fathers, siblings of all ages, grandparents, doctors, rescue works, etc.

• Figures of animals of all kinds – pets, wildlife, fish, fowl, real and imaginary, etc.

• Items from the natural world from which scenarios can be built – shells, driftwood, stones, pine cones, acorns, crystals, miniature trees, flowers, marbles, etc.

• Buildings and vehicles such as those used for model train settings – bridges, houses, churches, schools, hospitals, cars, buses, ambulances, fire trucks, helicopters and more.

• From dollhouse collections – furniture, musical instruments, toys, decorations and household objects

• Pint size superheroes, soldiers (and associated weaponry and vehicles) and fantastical figures

• Objects associated with spiritual practice and transformation such as angels, chalices, religious figures such as Budda, Madonna, Vishna and more.

You may have some of these items hiding in your closet or in a box in the basement. You can also find them at flea markets, the attic, garage sales, thrift shops, dollar stores, model shops, aquarium stores, anywhere that might be a treasure trove of very small objects.

We have a basket in the lobby at Kara where you can drop off your donation. Just remember: the tiny treasure you unearth and donate to Kara may be the key to a client’s healing.

Kara is the Gothic root of the word "care."
It means to reach out, to care, to lament, to grieve with.
